The World of Piano Technology

By Greg Moore RPT

This is a very interesting time in history with everything becoming automated; computers taking over the work of millions; pianos even becoming increasingly computerized. The art of aural piano tuning is becoming less of a necessity with the advent of sophisticated Electronic Tuning Devices (ETDs). However, there is still a great need for the true craftsman in the world of piano technology. Piano technicians must still rely on specialized training to properly tune a piano.

To be a true technician, they must also be able to repair any one of thousands of parts which make one of the greatest mechanical instruments play. These parts - most of which are in what is called the action - must be adjusted or regulated relative to each other to produce the smooth, pleasing feeling the pianist experiences and sound which is enjoyed by both the pianist and the audience. These skills and many more must accompany the piano tuner if he is to be considered a technician.

As long as there are pianos, there must of necessity be piano technicians to make them play beautifully.
